Similar to Western medicine, an acupuncturist makes a diagnostic
assessment that takes into account the patient's present and
past symptoms and complaints. From that assessment, the practitioner
will lie the patient down, and insert needles. Most people cringe
when they hear the word N-E-E-D-L-E-S. Our fear with "needles"
is an association many of us have as children, or currently as
adults. Thin, solid, sterile stainless-steel needles are used
to activate or inhibit the flow of Qi
. Needles penetrate a fraction of an inch, and the usual sensation
is a quick pin prick.
Response to treatment is highly individual. A drifting, dreamy
sense of well being and relaxation is usual, as is an elevation
of spirits. Most people are relieved to find that the treatments
are not especially uncomfortable and, in fact, look forward to
the experience.
If you decide to explore the benefits of acupuncture, your practitioner
will explain your individual treatment, and answer any questions
you have.
The Heart of Chinese Medicine: Qi
Western medicine is the American medical system we often use
in the United States. Chinese medicine is many styles of alternative
healing practices, like Acupuncture. A term referred often in
Chinese medicine is Qi ("chee"). It is mentioned here
only because the concept of Qi is absolutely at the heart of
Chinese medicine. Life is defined by Qi even though it is impossible
to grasp, measure, quantify, see, or isolate. In ancient times,
when Chinese cities were fortified by walls, gates were opened
to receive sustenance and closed to keep harm away. Acupuncture
points are gateways, subtle portals of the body that are opened
and closed to adjust its dynamic [Qi].
What Acupuncture Can Treat
Treatment to many ailments by Western medicine is prescribing
a drug. Chinese medicine is an alternative, and usually much
healthier and has faster results. Acupuncture can treat many
ailments, addictions, diseases, or help reduce daily stress.
